"C'est la plus ancienne sculpture connue d'un couple faisant l'amour. Taillée dans un morceau de calcite scintillant, elle montre les amants face à face. Une personne a les bras autour des épaules de l'autre dont les jambes sont enroulées autour de la taille de la première. Cette tendre étreinte sexuelle est rendue plus explicite par la forme ingénieusement phallique de l'ensemble, quel que soit l'angle de vue. Natufian, environ 11000 ans. Probablement de la caverne d'Ain Sakri, Palestine."

"This is the oldest known sculpture of a couple making love. Made on a sparkling piece of calcite, it shows the lovers face to face. One person has their arms around the shoulders of the other whose legs are drawn up around the waist of the first. This tender sexual embrace is made more explicit because the sculpture is ingeniously phallic whichever way you look at it. Natufian, about 11000 years old. Probably from the cave of Ain Sakri, Palestine."

Obélisque noir de Salmanazar III (Nimrud, 9e siècle avant JC) - Côté B, de haut en bas. 1) Deux fonctionnaires assyriens, un palefrenier étranger et un cheval aux riches attributs, représentant les chevaux pour lesquels Gilzanu était célèbre. 2) Deux fonctionnaires assyriens et trois tributaires d'Israël avec de l'argent, de l'or, des vases d'or, de l'étain ... 3) Des animaux exotiques de Musri (Mushri) : un bœuf (buffle), un rhinocéros (indien), une antilope. (Le sculpteur n'avait certainement jamais vu de rhinocéros). 4) Quatretributaires de Suhu avec de l'argent, de l'or ... du byssus (un textile), des vêtements avec des garnitures multicolores et du linge (des vêtements). 5) Deux fonctionnaires assyriens présentent trois tributaires apportant les hommages de Patina.

(The sculptor had clearly never seen a rhinoceros). 4) Four tribute-bearers from Suhu with silver, gold... byssus (a textile), garments with multi-coloured trim and linen (garments). 5) Two Assyrian oficials introduce three tribute bearers with tribute from Patina.

La plaque d'argile cuite connue sous le nom de la Reine de la Nuit, ou plaque Burney, représente une femme nue aillée, à l'origine peinte en rouge, portant la coiffe des divinités mésopotamiennes. Debout sur deux lions, ses jambes se terminent par des serres d’oiseau de proie, et elle est accompagnée par deux chouettes. Elle tient à la main le bâton et l'anneau, insignes de la royauté. La plaque date du 2e millénaire avant notre ère et représente Ishtar, la grande déesse de l'amour et de la guerre, ou sa soeur Ereshkigal, Dame de la Grande Terre et reine du royaume des morts.

The baked clay plate known as the Queen of the Night, or Burney plaque, depicts a naked, winged woman, originally painted red, wearing the headdress of the Mesopotamian deities. Standing on two lions, her legs end with birds of prey, and she is accompanied by two owls. She holds in her hand the staff and the ring, the insignia of royalty. The plaque dates from the 2nd millennium BC and represents Ishtar, the great goddess of love and war, or her sister Ereshkigal, Lady of the Great Earth and queen of the realm of the dead.
